"From Manual Complexity to Digital Clarity"

Where it started

Internship at Karu Capital: Worked on a project aimed at improving Alberta's residual market car insurance during my internship at Karu Capital, an Alberta-based company focused on tackling micro-industry challenges.

Alberta Car Insurance System: The system is divided into two parts:

Open Market Insurance:
For standard drivers.

Residual Market Insurance:
For high-risk drivers, such as those with DUIs or unique vehicles.

Client Pain Points

  • Manual Complexity: The existing rate manual is vast and difficult to navigate, creating significant challenges for brokers to efficiently determine pricing. This results in high cognitive loadand increased time spent on manual calculations.
  • Inefficiency and Human Error: The manual system leads to inefficiencies, errors, and frustrations, as brokers must sift through large volumes of information and cross-reference multiple tables to generate accurate rates.
  • Lack of Automation:The system lacked the automation that could help streamline the manual processes. Without digital support, brokers were unable to easily access the information needed to make fast and accurate decisions.

Target Audience

To create an effective solution, we needed a deep understanding of the target audience—Alberta-based brokers working with residual marketinsurance. Our user persona, "Sammy”, represents a broker who struggles with the current rate manual. Sammy experiences frustration due to the overwhelming complexity and time-consuming nature of manual calculations, highlighting the need for a more intuitive and efficienttool.

Key Insight

  • Time-Consuming Process: Brokers were spending excessive time manually calculating rates, which could be better spent focusing on client relationships and strategic tasks.
  • Frustration with Complexity: The manual system leads to The intricacy of the rate manual often left brokers confused, leading to errors and delays in providing quotes.
  • Need for Automation:A significant gap in the existing process was the absence of automated tools to support rate calculations, which could improve both accuracy and efficiency.

Ideation & Design Goals

  • Simplify Complexity: We wanted to reduce the cognitive load on brokers by creating an intuitive interface that organizes the information into easy-to-understand sections.
  • Automate Calculations: To eliminate the risk of human error and reduce time spent on manual work, automation was a core component of the solution. The tool would calculate rates based on the inputs of the brokers , reducing time and improving accuracy.
  • Improve User Efficiency:The digital tool should support brokers in quickly accessing the information they need and make the rate calculation process faster and more straightforward.

Design Process

The design process involved creating an interface that is simple and clean with user-friendly dashborad. Here's the typography and color palette chosen carefully.

Explainer Video Creation

In addition to web design, I was tasked with creating an explainer video that highlighted the challenges faced by Alberta car insurance brokers and how Karu Capital's solution effectively addressed those issues.

I had full creative freedom to design and animate the video, allowing me to leverage my skills in visual storytelling and animation. The video was carefully structured into three key sections:

  • Problems & challenges faced by brokers
  • Karu Capital's solution to these issues
  • Disclaimers & conclusion for a comprehensive understanding
  • Design Principles for Engagement To ensure a well-balanced and engaging animation, I applied essential visual design principles, including:

  • Visual hierarchy for clear storytelling
  • Color contrast to emphasize key elements
  • Balanced composition to maintain viewer interest
